Catastrophic damage caused by a tsunami blanketed most islands in volcanic ash. Complicating matters further, communication lines to the rest of the world were severed due to multiple breaks in underwater cables. Friends of Tonga partnered with local Tongan aid organizations which was critical as the Kingdom had managed to avoid the scourge of COVID by closing their borders early in the pandemic. CTRPCV grant funds were used for efforts directed at providing basic water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
